Got back from maelstrom. Interesting event. Highlight was chatting to House Lyrus, only to hear a commution from outside. Followed the crowd out, to see the two head priests of my group executing a man in broad daylight. I think it says something about Maelstrom that noone rushed to save the man ^^. Sadly it didn't turn out for the best for those two. It seems killing someone because he said he was a necromancer isn't actually legal. Ah well.
In RL, just got back from 2 weeks of maths conferences. They involved a small number of helpful lectures, and a large number of un-understandable lectures (there were people from all other maths giving lectures. Thus much jargon, little in way of definitions and explaining to the layperson). I ending up spending most of my time doodling in my workbook. Talking to my supervision though, my doodles can actually be converted into Interesting Stuff(tm), so that's good to know. More theorems for the thesis ^^
On Wednsday we had the London Mathematical Society Midlands meeting. I spent most of the day running around getting a poster for the PhD poster competition during the tea-break (Sidenote- I've had about 15 tea breaks over the last week. Hands trembling from caffiene). Only poster I had was aimed to teach random people in street why jigsaws are useful. Was *slightly* out of tone for a convolution of mathematicians.
Ended up that the competition had two entrants. My A2 poster, and a quick article someone had printed out. Bit of a waste of time, but on bright side- £100 of book vouchers! |

urgh... I just found out why this hotel was cheap. Because it's next to a nightclub which is open till 3am, and the hotel has single glazing, with artisticly placed holes in the window. Think I'm not making it to Warwick games society today.
As an aside, for anyone near to Leicester who is interested (possibly a very small set) I'm going to be presenting at this http://www2.le.ac.uk/offices/ssds/slc/events/festival-of-postgraduate-research/festival-of-postgraduate-research . Only mathematican presenting. Also, just found out one of my friends from Warwick is a professor now, as she was introduced as one when she helped present the introductory speech for the Alumni event o_0. |

| At Coventry this weekend |
[Jun. 18th, 2009|11:56 pm] |
I'm going to be around Warwick Uni this weekend (Alumni weekend thing). While I'm probably going to be busy on Saturday through the day, I'd be free at other times (like evenings). If people want to meet up, email me or text my phone (or reply of course!).
As an aside, I'm also planning on running a one-shot RPG based on one of queex 's old ideas. The PCs will start in a dry-up river bed, tending a few crops. They'll notice the bed (and some NPCs in a similar situation) are starting to dissolve into white sand. They will find their memories are fading too. Should be an interesting hook for a short adventure. |

Just got back from about 10 hours of playing board games. Makes me the cop-outer, since it's a 24 hour charity event. They are still playing Munchkin as I type, and they've even managed to *finish* a game of Talisman!
Anyway, I'm going to take the opportunity to rant about an interesting board game I saw there...

Ok after last time (when the heroic party ambushed and tortured helpless kobolds), it's time to arrange the time for the meetup. We've already agreed Sunday, but what time? I suggest 2pm. Opinions? |

| | productive | ] | For anyone in Coventry, I'm planning on starting up a 4th Edition D&D mini-campaign. Aim is to see what the system is like, and have fun. Planning on running one session per weekend for a few weeks, or until people get bored. I can make stock characters, or you can design your own. Squeaky (for those who know him) is also planning on joining in.
Post here if you are interested :) |

| | satisfied | ] | Just recovered from Amecon ^^ It was really good fun- a room full of crazy anime fans can make even karoake fun (albeit via mad dancing), and formal balls are almost fun when one in ten people are dressed as the Joker from Batman Returns.
Ironically though, I have the song 'Speed over Beethoven' stuck in my head, despite it not being played in any of the J-Pop/Rock discos. o_0 |

Been to Amecon at Leicester University. Lots of J-Pop/J-Rock, AMV discos, and a charity auction, where there was a bidding war over a 12 inch tall plushie. The price started at £5, and after about 15 mins, it finally ended at £400. People were surprised, and envious of the winners' job ^^. |

Emilie Autumn is amazing and apparently not very known in the UK. I suggest having a listen at her songs 'I want my Innocence back' and 'Liar'.
Also saw the new Batman movie. Thought it was good, though not a fan of the Batman actor.

| | calm | ] | Right, brief summary of events since I've last posted. End of year report went well. While I didn't hear anything about it after the event, it seems that absence of news counts as good news ^^. Went to quite a few events- Maelstrom, a weekend-long gaming session (surprisingly boring at times, considering I enjoy games) and so on.
Most interesting event was when the Maths department got invaded by 14 year olds. One of the lecturers took it on herself to invite local schools to visit the maths department at Leicester. After an amount of messing around, one school turned up with a class of thirty. The teachers of the class spent the day relaxing, watching as this lone lecturer (without much in the way of experience in herding teenagers) tried to organise them, getting them to lectures and so on.
I gave a bit of a helping hand in the 'problem session' at the end of the day. It was interesting seeming what classrooms are like, though I got spooked as some of them started calling me 'Sir' *mind breaks*.
It's pretty much the end of term now, so I'll have more time free soon as well. Hopefully I'll get to meet some of you. And to purp1e_magic , sorry about not being able to get up to you for the party! |

| | nervous | ] | Pardon the lack of updating, but it's coming up to my end-of-year report. Thus large amounts of me trying to gather everything I've written this year, in an attempt to justify myself. On bright side, it'll be gone by friday, and this weekend I'll be going down to a friend's birthday party in London. Lets hope it'll be me getting drunk in happiness, not commiseration. |
